How to Make Fresh Christmas Garlands

Create a captivating Christmas centerpiece for your dining table using fresh garland made from tree trimmings. Not only does this add a natural and festive touch to your holiday decor, but it's also budget-friendly. You can collect free Christmas tree trimmings from your local Home Depot or Lowe's.

To prepare your trimmings, take a hammer and gently hammer the ends of the branches. This will help the branches absorb more water and stay fresh longer. Soak them in cold water to help rehydrate the branches and keep them looking fresh. After soaking, hang them out to dry completely.

For added longevity, preserve your trimmings with a mixture of glycerin and water. This simple step will help your centerpiece last throughout the holiday season. Simply take the branches and arrange them in a vase filled with about 1 to 2 parts glycerin to water- just enough to soak the tips of the hammered branches (I like to do this step while they are drying out from the soak).

Don't limit yourself to just pine trimmings. Incorporate other greenery like eucalyptus and holly into your arrangements for added interest and texture.

To assemble your centerpiece, start by laying a beautiful table runner on your dining table as a base. This will not only protect your table but also add an extra layer of color and texture to your display.

Next, arrange your preserved trimmings along the length of the runner. Start with the larger pieces first, spreading them out evenly. Then, fill in the gaps with your smaller trimmings. This will create a lush, full look. You may use floral wire or basic zip ties to secure the branches together.

Now, it's time to add some sparkle. Decorate around the length of your garland using candles and candlestick holders. Choose candles in varying heights to add visual interest. You can also use pine cones and beautiful ball ornaments in coordinating colors. Scatter these along the garland, nestling some of them into the greenery for a more integrated look.

Remember, this arrangement isn't just for your dining table. You can use the same method to create a stunning wreath for your front door. Simply arrange your trimmings in a circular shape on a wreath form, secure with floral wire or zip ties, and decorate as desired.

Finally, place your centerpiece in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to help it last longer. With these simple steps, you can enjoy your festive creation throughout the holiday season!
